Danish road tolls in 2027 – Five steps to prepare your business

The Danish government intends to extend the Danish road toll scheme from 1 January 2027 to include trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes.

Once the extension takes effect, more businesses will need to manage road tolls as part of their day-to-day operations. For some, this will mean adopting new solutions and establishing new workflows.

The final decision is expected in October 2026, but you don’t need to postpone your preparation. By reviewing your fleet, driving patterns, and existing solutions now, you can be ready to take action once the final framework is confirmed.

Here are 5 things worth doing now

  1. Get an overview of your fleet
Which of your trucks have a maximum permitted gross weight over 3.5 tonnes, and how many? Which of these trucks are already subject to road tolls?

A complete overview of your fleet will help you understand how an extension of the road toll scheme could affect your business operationally, administratively, and financially.

It will also put you in a better position to plan and take the necessary steps once the final decision has been made.

  2. Look at where you drive – not just in Denmark
Road tolls are not limited to Denmark.

If your trucks also operate internationally, now is a good time to review how you manage road tolls across all the countries where you drive.

Which countries do you operate in today, and where might your business expand in the future? How many different toll agreements, on-board units, and solutions do you currently use?

Your needs can change quickly as you add new customers, destinations, and routes. That is why it is worth considering whether your current solution is flexible enough to adapt as your driving patterns change.

  3. Review your current road toll solution
If more of your trucks become subject to road tolls, check whether your current solution can meet your future needs.

Consider both the technology installed in your vehicles and the services that come with it.

Does your solution cover all the countries in which you operate? Is it flexible enough to adapt as your needs change? And can you access the support and guidance you need when regulations and requirements change?

  4. Consider the administrative workload – not just the toll payments
Paying road tolls is only one part of the task.

If more trucks become subject to road tolls, the administrative workload may also increase. This can include handling invoices, verifying toll charges, tracking different national regulations, and managing multiple on-board unit providers and systems.

It is therefore worth considering whether you can simplify your road toll management.

Can multiple payments be consolidated? Can you get a better overview of your costs? And can you reduce the time spent on administration?

A good road toll solution should do more than ensure that payments are processed correctly. It should also make day-to-day operations easier.

  5. Be ready to act
You don't need to make decisions before the government approves the toll extension. But you also don't need to wait to get an overview of your current situation.

Use this time to review your fleet, driving patterns, current agreements, and future needs.

This will help you understand how the extension could affect your business, identify any unanswered questions, and determine whether changes may be needed. That way, you will be better prepared to act once the government has made its final decision.
